Uganda’s dense forests are home to over half the world’s 1004 or so mountain gorillas (as of May 2018) – the rest live in neighbouring Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As they do not survive in captivity, preservation of these fragile habitats is essential for their survival.
Mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In these areas, tracking takes place at 5 locations Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo in BINP and Ntebeko in Mgahinga. All locations combined give a total of over 18 Gorilla groups; however, the permit number is limited because only 8 people are allowed to visit a gorilla family per day for only one hour.

Uganda has some Luxury lodges located at the edge of the Bwindi forest where you can stay while gorilla trekking in the rainforest, Bwindi impenetrable national park is located near the border of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo making it easy to access from Rwandan capital Kigali which is famous for the genocide memorials, the drive is only two hours from Kigali to Ugandan border in Katuna and another two hours to Bwindi forest compared to the 10 hours from Uganda main capital Kigali.

Mountain Gorillas
Unlike other safari activities in Africa, gorilla trekking is pretty special due to the Conservation status of the mountain gorillas, the gorillas are considered endangered and there is only over 1000 individuals left in the 3 countries of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo only so this will call for proper preparation before travelling to see the Mountain gorillas.
Many people would wonder how safe would it be to enter the thick rainforest to trek for such a giant looking Ape and the answer is that the gorillas will trek in Uganda are habituated Gorillas, which are made used to human beings after 3 years of close monitoring before they are made available for Visitors.
Best time to trek Mountain Gorillas in Uganda
The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season which runs from May to October and from December to February when the trails are drier making the trek in the thick rainforest easier and also with less rainforest the photography is better.
