What to expect on a walking safari in Serengeti national park

Generally, your day will start with a light breakfast to get you walking around 06:30h. Our camp cook will prepare a packed breakfast that will be enjoyed on a rock or next to a stream somewhere out there. Your guide will aim to have you back in camp before it’s too hot for a sit-down lunch. Afternoons are generally spent like the animals with eyes closed in a shady place. As the day cools down you set off on a shorter afternoon walk to enjoy an African sunset.

You trek into remote areas of the Serengeti with an extremely well-trained walking guide, a ranger, a chef, and porters who will carry the bulk of the equipment. You are only required to carry a light backpack (maximum 15-20 kg) and to set up your own lightweight tent. To sleep in a tent under the trees with only the canvas between you and the bush is an experience not easily forgotten.

Walks are operated inside wilderness and rhino protection zones where few others are allowed. You will have the vast, untouched wilderness to explore in solitude. These remote areas mainly consist of gently rolling hills with small streams, springs in the valleys, and small grassland plains surrounded by sparse acacia forests. Big granite outcrops called kopjes give the area a great feel and look.

During this thrilling Serengeti walking safari, you will walk from camp to camp. You won’t need to carry anything besides a daypack containing personal items for a day walk, water, and potentially a snack prepared by the cook. All meals served in the camp will be three-course meals.

Best time to do walking safaris in Serengeti national park

The best time to visit the Serengeti National Park for a walking safari is in the Dry season (from late June to October). This period offers the best wildlife viewing in general – with the wildebeest migration as its absolute highlight. Wildlife viewing is good throughout the year, but certain areas are better at specific times.
