Facts about gorilla trekking in Uganda

  • Uganda gorilla permits are sold by the government of Uganda through Uganda wildlife authority meaning that we can only help book the permits but we can’t guarantee them as they sold on first come first serve basis.
  • By road Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park are located 9-10 hours from the main capital Kampala and 4 hours from the Rwandan Capital Kigali and access is possible via Katuna or Cyanika border points.
  • The best way to get to Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla national parks is by air, clients can fly to Kihihi airstrip which is about 1 hour and 3 minutes to Bwindi forest and Kisoro airstrip which is about 45 minutes to the forest.
  • Though the gorilla permit prices change time and again currently Uganda gorilla permits cost USD 700$ per person per trek and this will allow you to see the gorillas for 1 hour unlike the gorilla habituation experience which cost USD 1500$ per person per trek this will give you a 4 hour experience with gorillas not fully habituated.
  • Gorilla trekking typically takes anything from 2 hours to 8 hours this depends on the movement of the mountain gorillas which is usually attributed to food and interaction with other wildlife so while planning a gorilla trek one needs some fitness level or perhaps lucky that you find them right away.

How long in advance do I have to book my gorilla permits

In reality it all depends on when you choose to travel because Uganda experiences 2 dry seasons from June to October and from December to February and these are usually the busiest tourism seasons and we recommend booking the permits at least 9 months in advance but for other months last minute enquiries can be made.
