Most organized game drives have a minimum age of 6, and there is a handful of National Parks in Africa that have an age restriction for entry. But it’s free entry in many National Parks for kids under 6 if you are self-driving.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1-3: Nankoma Island-Blue Zebra Lodge (Luxury Safari Tents)

Upon arrival at the Lilongwe International Airport, your family will be met by our expedition leader, after a warm welcome to Malawi you will start your driving to Senga Bay – Salima for your boat transfer to Nankoma Island. At Nankoma Island, your accommodation will be at the Blue Zebra Lodge in safari tents for the first two nights.

The lodge offers 8 exclusive tented en-suite chalets, each overlooking the lake with crystal clear waters. The chalets are set in an unspoiled environment and guests are surrounded by nature and luxury. Guests are free to chill at the infinity pool, kayak around the islands, or enjoy a game of volleyball as part of the full board package. The lodge also offers free use of snorkeling equipment to view the unique colorful fish that gives the lodge its name and that inhabit every inch of the coastline.

Day 3-6: Liwonde National Park- Mvuu Camp

After breakfast, you will be transferred by boat to the mainland. Where you will be received by your guide and then we will start driving to Liwonde National Park. Your accommodation at the Liwonde National Park will be at Mvuu Camp.

Mvuu Camp overlooks a broad stretch of the Shire River (pronounced ‘Shiree’), with a profusion of hippos, crocodiles, and the amazing birdlife of the Liwonde National Park. An impressive thatched dining and lounge area is situated nearby, offering a magnificent vista of the Shire River. Dinners are sometimes held under the stars in a specially constructed boma. Activities at Mvuu Camp revolve around boating trips on the Shire River and game drives (morning and afternoon/evening). If you are curious about the hidden spots of Liwonde National Park, go for a nature walk or a bike ride to discover the surroundings and get surprised by the unknown places of this park.

Day 6-8: Lake Malawi- Mumbo Island.

After breakfast, you will drive out of the Liwonde National Park and towards Cape Maclear, Good tar roads lead almost all the way to Cape Maclear. Once at the reception, you can catch the Kayak Africa boat to the island (which leaves at 10:30 or 15:00) and takes around 45 minutes.

Mumbo Island is a deserted tropical island on the expansive waters of Lake Malawi. With amazing underwater boulders, around 500 species of colorful Cichlid fish, and placid, clear water, the national park offers what many consider the best freshwater snorkeling and scuba diving in the world.

Day 8: Departure Lilongwe

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Lilongwe International Airport for your onward flight back home.
