Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1: Pick up from your lodge and transfer to Volcanoes national park

After morning breakfast at your hotel in Kigali, you will be received by your guide and transfer to Kigali city for a city tour, during the city tour you will visit the Kigali genocide memorial and the Belgian peace center and later you will have lunch at the famous hotel Rwanda, after Lunch, you will start your drive to Volcanoes national park, upon arrival you will check in to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 2: First gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes national park

Gorilla trekking is one of the greatest wildlife encounters in Africa, coming face to face with the endangered mountain gorillas is one of the greatest experiences of your visit to Rwanda, after morning breakfast at your lodge you will dress up in your trekking gear and transfer to Kinigi to meet the ranger guides and do registration, after registration you will be split into smaller groups of 8 people or less and you will have a general briefing by your lead guide, after the briefing you will transfer to the starting point to start your gorilla trek, this trek can take anything from 2-8 hours during this time you will have 1 hour of viewing the gorillas, after viewing the Mountain gorillas you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 3: Golden monkey trekking experience in volcanoes national park

Yet another exciting day in Volcanoes national park, after morning breakfast you will transfer to Kinigi for briefing about the golden monkey trekking, after you will drive to the starting point to start your trek, upon locating the golden monkeys you will spend 1 hour with them and later return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 4: Second gorilla trekking experience in volcanoes national park

After morning breakfast full dressed in your trekking gear, you will drive again to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing about your second gorilla trekking experience, on this day you will visit a different gorilla family from the one you visited on your first trek, this will be totally a different gorilla experience, just like the previous experience, you will spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas and later return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 5: Drive to Lake Kivu in Karongi

After morning breakfast you will start your scenic drive along the Kivu belt road that meanders along Lake Kivu offering some breath-taking views of the Lake, tea farms, and the incredible Gishwati Mukura national park upon arrival at your lodge you will check in to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 6: Drive to Nyungwe forest national park

After Lunch you will start your drive to One of Rwanda’s renowned tropical rainforests, this forest is home to 13 primate species and it’s one of the top places in Rwanda for birding and canopy walk, upon arrival at the lodge you will check in to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 7: Chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe forest

After early morning breakfast, you will start your drive to the Gisakura park office where you will pick up the ranger guide and then drive to Cyamudongo tourism zone where the chimpanzee trekking experience takes place, this trek can take anything from 3-4 hours and if your luck you would have found the chimpanzees and you will spend 1 hour with them and later return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 8: Drive from Nyungwe to Kigali for your flight

After Morning breakfast you will start your drive back to Kigali via Butale where you will visit the ethnographic museum and have lunch after lunch you will then continue to King’s palace Nyanza where you will experience the traditional Rwandan Culture and later you will continue to Kigali for your outbound flight or you will be transferred to your hotel for overnight.

When to book the safari package

We recommend booking this safari package for 9 months to 1 year to allow us to secure your gorilla trekking and chimpanzee permits in good time as the permits are sold on a first come first serve basis.

Best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda is open for primate tracking all year round but the best time to see the gorillas is during the dry season from June to October when there is less rainfall making hiking much easier
