Detailed safari itinerary

Day1: Arrival in Kigali international airport

Upon arrival in Kigali international airport you will be received by our guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel in Kigali for overnight.

Day 2: Drive to Kanombe or Cyangugu on the shores of Lake Kivu

After morning breakfast you depart Kigali for Cyangugu, this town is located on the shores of Lake Kivu bordering DR Congo’s Bukavu, this drive will take you through Nyungwe forest upon arrival you will check in to your lodge for relaxation and you will meet our representative in Congo on the Rwandan side and stay overnight in Cyangugu.

Day 3: Cross the border at Bukavu to Congo and stay overnight at Bukavu

After morning breakfast you will be picked up by our representative in DR Congo and drive to Bukavu border to clear immigration and after you will drive to Bukavu town for overnight and gorilla trekking briefing.

Day 4: Drive to Kahuzi Biega for lowland gorilla trekking experience

After early morning breakfast you will drive to Kahuzi Biega national park arriving in time for your gorilla trekking briefing , after the briefing you will start your trek on foot, upon locating the lowland gorillas you will spend 1 hour with them and later return to the park for a debrief and later transfer to Bukavu town for overnight.

Day 5: Drive to Kahuzi Biega for second gorilla trekking experience after gorilla trekking cross back to Rwanda

After morning breakfast you will again drive to Kahuzi Biega for your second gorilla trekking experience, this will be yet another extra ordinary day in the dense jungles of the Mighty forest, upon locating the gorillas you will view the gorillas for 1 hour and return to the park for a debrief and then bid farewell to the rangers and drive to Bukavu for a border crossing back to Rwanda.

Day 6: Full day relaxation at the shores of Lake Kivu

Today you will spend the whole day absorbing the memories of your gorilla trek at your lodge on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Day 7: Chimpanzee trekking experience in Nyungwe forest and transfer to Lake Kivu

After an early morning breakfast you will drive to Nyungwe forest national park in the Cyamudongo area, for your chimpanzee trekking experience, upon arrival you will meet the rangers for a briefing and after start your trek in to the rain forest in search of chimpanzees upon locating the chimps you will spend 1 hour with the chimpanzees after you will return to park for a debrief and later drive Lake Kivu in Karongi.

Day 8: Drive back to Kigali for your departure flight

After lazily breakfast you will start your drive to Kigali, depending on your flight time you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight.

Best time for gorilla trekking in Congo

The best time to travel to DRC is during the long dry season from May to September, with July markedly the driest month, followed by June. The temperature also drops ever so slightly during these months.
