Day 1: Arrive, transfer to hotel

Arrive at Freetown’s Lungi International Airport, which is one of the world’s most uniquely-situated airports, located on the northern coast of the Freetown Estuary. You will be met by a representative from Wilderness Explorers Africa who will have a signboard with your name on it after customs.

Day 2: Bunce Island, Tasso Island

After breakfast, you will be picked up to catch the boat for your tour of Bunce Island. Bunce Island was the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa. This is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of the slave trade. After spending a couple of hours exploring the substantial ruins on the island, including the factory house, fortification, slave prison, watchtowers, dormitories, storerooms, and power magazine you will be transferred to Tasso Island.

Tasso Island

This previously forgotten island now has a tourist camp run by the Tasso Eco-tourism Project which is a community business registered by Freetown City Council, which aims to bring new jobs and livelihoods to the 5,000 islanders who currently rely entirely on fishing. Spend the night in one of the wooden, beachside chalets each with: a double bed, mosquito net, en suite shower, and composting toilet.

Day 3: Tasso Island, Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Enjoy canoeing, bird watching, nature study, sightseeing tours, volunteering, meeting local people, studying colonial history and tracing American ancestors, or just walking, sunbathing, and relaxing in peaceful and beautiful surroundings. After lunch, you will board the “gladi-gladi” for your return trip to Freetown and then make your way to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary where you will spend the night.

See the amazing work being done by Bala and his team. Chimpanzees are often cruelly or ignorantly kept as pets, or sometimes hunted for their meat. Today, however, more than 100 primates find haven at Tacugama. Overnight at one of the elegant thatch huts known as the Lodge amid the green forest canopy and calls of the chimps all around.

Day 4: The Banana Islands

This morning, we head to Kent Village on the peninsula to catch a boat to Banana Island, for a chance to explore this scenic paradise. Three islands make up the Banana Islands: Dublin and Ricketts are linked by a stone causeway.

Lunch will consist of locally-caught fresh fish, prawns, and lobsters (all subject to availability).

Day 5: Full Day at Banana Islands

Spend the full day exploring the Banana Islands, you can take the two-hour hike to Ricketts, go fishing with local fishermen or go snorkeling. Alternatively, you could always just chill on the beach.

Day 6: Freetown Historical Tour

After breakfast and farewells, we head back into Freetown to look around the vibrant city and make a sweep through its historical core.

Day 8: Farewell and see you again!

After breakfast this morning, we will head back to Freetown where (time-permitting) you can do some last-minute shopping for gifts and souvenirs before being transferred to the airport for your trip home! After getting to the airport you will be assisted with checking in procedures by our VSL TRAVEL Airport representative.
