7 Days Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari

Serengeti national park is covered with grassland plains though there are others where you’ll find a riverine forest, woodlands, and savannah. The area of the park is really big but it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to wild animals living there. It has big populations of wildebeest, zebra, lion, hyena, giraffe, buffalo, cheetah, hippo, kongoni, impala, and others and all these can commonly be sighted. Black rhinos are also there though rarely spotted.

Safari itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Arusha to Tarangire national park for game drives

After morning breakfast at your lodge, you will start your drive to Tarangire national park, this scenic drive will take you through the incredible countryside where you will expect to see households, landscapes along the way, upon arrival at the lodge you will check-in to the lodge for relaxation and later you will do an evening game drive in the park in search of elephants, lions, buffalo and other wildlife that reside on the shores of the permanent rivers in the park.

Day 2: Drive from Tarangire national park to Serengeti national park  

After a short early morning game drive in the park, you will return to the lodge for breakfast and later start your long drive to Serengeti national park, this drive will take you through incredible landscapes and also part of the journey is through the park where you might encounter wildlife en route to the lodge upon arrival you will check-in for relaxation and overnight.

Day 3: Full day game drives in Serengeti national park to follow the wildebeest Migration herds

After early morning breakfast, you will take a picnic lunch and head into the park, this drive will be slow as you will be looking out for the abundant wildlife that traverses the plains of Serengeti national park, some of the wildlife includes elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopard, Zebra and you will also be making you’re the Mara river to try and catch the wildebeest cross the Mara River, this is the highlight of your trip to the Serengeti, the wildebeest migration is an annual migration of Millions of wildlife from Serengeti to Masai mara after the lovely game drive you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 4: Full day game drives Serengeti national park to follow the wildebeest migration herds

After early morning breakfast, you will again take a picnic lunch and start your slow game drive to the Mara River, the river crossing usually occur more often in the middle of the day so you want to be around the wildebeest herds at the peak of the heat at the Mara River after a spectacular day of safari you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 5: Full day game drives in Serengeti national park to follow the wildebeest Migration herds

After two exciting days of game drives in the park, you will enjoy a morning at leisure and have bush breakfast organised by the lodge and later drive to the Mara River to follow the wildebeest herds hoping to see the last glimpse of the wildebeest Mara river crossing depending on the day you may choose to return to lodge early and enjoy a swim at the pool and enjoy the sundowner from your porch with a cold drink.

Day 6: Drive to Ngorongoro conservation area

After morning breakfast you will bid farewell to the lodge and start your drive to the Ngorongoro conservation area, en route to the crater you will visit the Olduvai Gorge museum to some of the oldest fossils found in the area and later you will drive to the lodge for relaxation and enjoy the sunset at your porch.

Day 7: Full day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater

After morning breakfast with packed lunch you will descent to the crater floor for a full day game drive in the crater, the Ngorongoro crater is one of the top places to see the big five wildlife, this is one of the few places to see the Rhinos, good leopard population is also seen in the Crater and abundant birdlife and later you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 8: Drive back to Arusha for your departure flight

After morning breakfast you bid farewell to the lodge and start your drive to Arusha, upon arrival in Arusha you will have a short city tour and do some shopping and later your guide will transfer you to the Kilimanjaro airport for your flight home or you will be transferred to your lodge for overnight.

Best time to witness wildebeest Migration in Serengeti

The best time to be in Serengeti for the River crossing is late July through August and October when river crossings are seen often and most of the grass in Serengeti has been mulched already and the wildebeest are desperate to get to Masai mara.
