NamibRand Nature Reserve, located in southern Namibia, is a private nature reserve established to help protect and conserve the unique ecology and wildlife of the south-west Namib Desert. Conserving the pro-Namib, the area along the eastern edge of the Namib Desert, is critically important in order to facilitate seasonal migratory wildlife routes and to protect biodiversity.

Skeleton coast is an untouched is wilderness, striking beauty, with a diverse array of wildlife. Yet journeying through the National Park will give you more than a rare, arresting ends-of-the-earth landscape. It’s also home to a thriving seal colony on Cape Cross, and is on the doorstep of the Himba, one of Namibia’s most recognizable tribes.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Windhoek and transfer to your lodge for relaxation

On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport you will be received and transferred to your lodge in Windhoek, depending on the time of arrival you may explore the city of Windhoek.

Day 2: Domestic flight from Windhoek to NamibRand nature Reserve

After morning breakfast you will be transferred to Windhoek Airport and then embark on your light aircraft flight to Kwessi Dunes in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, just south of Sossusvlei, on arrival you will check in to your room, enjoy lunch and relax a bit and later you will be head out for a scenic game drive as you try to catch the sunset over the desert.

Day 2: Full day exploring NamibRand nature reserve & Sossusvlei

After morning breakfast in the morning you will embark on a drive where you will look out for a lookout for springbok and oryx, as well as some of the rarer creatures like aardwolf and later in the afternoon you may enjoy scenic drives, nature walks and quad biking all offered by the lodge and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Flight from NamibRand nature reserve to Swakopmund and transfer to Kaokoland 

After morning breakfast you will again take your scenic flight over the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck, Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour, before touching down in Swakopmund for a beach lunch. Then, it’s onward to Hoanib Valley Camp, over the dramatic Skeleton Coast and then inland to the beautiful interior of the country to Hoanib Valley Camp where you can enjoy your dinner under the African Sky.

Day 4: Full day exploring Kaokoland 

Spend today looking for desert-adapted giraffes, game driving through the sandy terrain or visiting the local Himba communities. You may be lucky enough to spot desert lion and rhino. One certainty, however, is the desert-adapted giraffe. End your day with dinner under the stars, swapping stories of your adventures around the crackling campfire.

Day 5: Drive from Kaokoland to Skeleton Coast

Get ready to enjoy the best transfer drive on the continent! You’ll pass incredible rock formations and desert-elephant digging for water, before arriving at the crashing waves and rolling dunes of the Skeleton Coast. Wow! See the day out with dinner in the ship-style dining room, surrounded by candelabras and old silverware.

Day 6: Full day exploring the Skeleton Coast

Enjoy your time at the award-winning Shipwreck Lodge. Activities on offer include quad biking, visits to the Clay Castle, seal colony and game drives. You could be lucky enough to spot giraffe, lion, baboons, elephant and elusive brown hyena in the dunes, whilst at the coast; you’ll find hundreds of Cape fur seals at the Mowe Bay Seal Colony, and plenty of birds flitting through the chilly ocean spray. Otherwise, just put your feet up and admire the views.

Day 7: Domestic flight from Skeleton coast to Windhoek

This morning you’ll meet the plane and fly back down the stunning Atlantic Coastline, before arriving back in Windhoek for your onward travel arrangements.

Best time to visit Namibia for wildlife safari

The best time to visit Namibia is in the Dry season from June to October, although it can be visited throughout the year. Wildlife viewing in all parks is best at this time of the year.
