Situated at an adjoining point of the range of the geographical zones, Virunga still offers a great deal of reach biodiversity, Virunga together with Mgahinga and Volcanoes national park features a count of 480 mountain gorillas slightly more than half of the world’s mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking is the main tourism activity in Congo and Virunga counts amongst the four national parks with the surviving mountain gorillas. The park consists of eight gorilla families all of which are exposed for trekking with Kabirizi being the largest group with 32 individual gorillas while others include; Rugendo, Manyara, Mapuwa, Lulengo among others.

Detailed safari itinerary
Day 1: Pick up from Kigali and transfer to DR Congo
Our guide will pick you from your hotel in Kigali and drive you to the border of Rwanda and Congo in Goma, on arrival you clear with immigration and continue to your lodge on the shores of Lake Kivu in Goma for relaxation, briefing by DR Congo gorilla guides and overnight.
Day 2: Tranfer to Virunga national park
After morning breakfast you will be picked up and transferred to DR Congo’s most prominent business centre the Goma for overnight on the shores of Lake Kivu, depending on the time you may choose to do a boat cruise on Lake Kivu.
Day 3: First Gorilla trekking Experience in Virunga NP
After early morning breakfast, guests will set off for a Gorillas trek at Bukima Ranger Post. On arrival to Bukima, meet your Ranger guides and local porters to receive a briefing before starting the Gorillas trek. Treks usually require 1.2.5 hours of hiking each way. After spending the allotted hour with Gorillas, return to Bukima camp where late lunch will be served. Have the rest of the afternoon off to explore Bukima including bird watching and visiting the Park’s bamboo project.
Day 4: Second Gorilla trekking Experience in Virunga NP
After breakfast set off for Gorillas trek, Meet again your Ranger guides and local potters and receive a briefing before starting the Gorillas trek. After spending the allotted hour with Gorillas, return to Bukima camp for lunch then be transported back to Mikeno Lodge where you will have the afternoon at leisure, free to relax on the lodge terrace or visit Gorillas Orphans at the Senkwekwe Centre, overnight at Mikeno Lodge.
Day 5: Return to Rwanda and drive to Volcanoes national park
After lazily morning breakfast you will drive to the border for immigration clearance and drive to Volcanoes national park on arrival your will check in to your lodge for relaxation and overnight.
Day 6: Golden monkey trekking experience
After morning breakfast you will be transferred to the park station for your golden monkey trekking experience by the expert rangers and later you will drive to the starting point for your golden monkey trekking experience.
Day 7: Drive to Kigali for your onward journey
After morning breakfast you will start your drive to Kigali for a short city tour and lunch and later depending on your flight you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey.
