With the setup of Kamembe airport in Rusizi on the shores of Lake Kivu, you can now fly from Kigali to Kamembe and take a 1-hour transfer to Nyungwe forest national park as opposed to the 8-hour transfer and this can give you great opportunity to do other optional activities in the Nyungwe forest.

Our 6 Days Fly-in Volcanoes NP gorillas & Chimpanzee safari will give you a great opportunity to trek the chimpanzees and gorillas in Rwanda, it will also give you the chance to enjoy a relaxing beach holiday at Kibuye or Karongi on the shores of Lake Kivu.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1: Flight from Kigali to Kamembe airport and transfer to Nyungwe forest

Depending on your flight schedule you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Kamembe airport upon arrival in Kamembe you will be received by your guide and transfer to Nyungwe national park for relaxation and overnight.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking experience in Cyamudongo

After early morning breakfast, you will be picked up by your guide and transferred to the park station to meet the rangers after you will drive to Cyamudongo where you trek the chimpanzees the chimpanzee trekking experience takes between 3-4 hours after you will return to the starting point and drive back to the Lodge for relaxation.

Day 3: Drive to Lake Kivu for relaxation

After lazily morning you will drive to Karongi on the shores of Lake Kivu where you have an evening sundowner boat cruise on the Lake with cold drinks, this drive is stunning with some extraordinary views of Lake Kivu.

Day 4: Drive to Volcanoes National Park

After morning breakfast you will start your scenic drive along the Kivu Belt where you expect to see lots of tea farms and the Gishwati Mukura national park upon arrival in Volcanoes national park you will check in to your lodge for relaxation and Overnight.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking Experience

One of the highlights of your trip is to come face to face with the Mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, after early morning breakfast you will be transferred to the park station in Kinigi for mountain gorilla briefing from the rangers after the briefing you will then drive to the starting point for the gorilla trek, upon locating the mountain gorillas you will then spend one hour with the gorillas in their natural habitat and after you will return to the Lodge for relaxation.

Day 6: Drive back to Kigali

After lazily breakfast depending on your flight schedule you will drive to Musanze to visit the Diana Fossey Museum after the visit you will then drive to Kigali for a short city tour after the tour you will be transferred to your day room in Kigali and later transferred to the airport for your outbound flight or you will be transferred to your place of accommodation.

Best time to travel

Rwanda can be visited all year round however the best time to travel is from May to October and from December to February when there is less rainfall or no rainfall making safari activities much fun and easier treks.
