5 Days Luxury Bale Mountains Safari

The Bale Mountains, in the Oromia Region of southeast Ethiopia, south of the Awash River, are part of the Ethiopian Highlands. They include Tullu Demtu, the second-highest mountain in Ethiopia, and Mount Batu. The Weyib River, a tributary of the Jubba River, rises in these mountains east of Goba.

Bale Mountains National Park is home to 14 species of endemic mammals; those of paramount importance include the Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala, and giant molerat, and Bale monkey. There are less than 400 wolves remaining in the wild, over half of which reside within the Park.

Day 2: Drive to Bale Mountains National Park

After a scenic but long drive from Addis Ababa, you are welcomed to the south-central Ethiopian highlands, home to some of the richest and most pristine wilderness on the planet, and one of the last places you’ll find the wild, enigmatic Ethiopian wolf. The landscape is a tapestry of juniper forests, rolling moorlands, lakes, gorges, and volcanic cavities. Bale Mountain Lodge sits at 2,380 meters in the heart of Bale Mountain National Park, in a forest clearing. This family-run lodge has tried hard to stay in harmony with its surroundings, with stone, wood and thatch, and its own hydroelectric power.

Tear your eyes from the views to admire the structure itself. Sensitively designed to blend with its surroundings, the lodge’s circular, slate-walled lounge and dining area is comfortably furnished, and has large windows. There’s a fireplace for cold evenings and a bar ideal for sampling local brews, cocktails, and good Rift Valley wines. Expect nourishing home-style meals.

After a wonderful breakfast, you will embark on a half-day hiking safari in the mountains in search of wildlife and later return to the lodge for leisure and relaxation at the beautiful mountain range.
