Burundi is literally overshadowed by its neighboring countries of Rwanda famous for mountain gorilla trekking, Tanzania famous for wildlife viewing and the annual Wildebeest Migration, the Democratic Republic of Congo for hiking one of the world’s most famous active volcanoes but the country is still gifted by a wide range of natural resources like Lake Tanganyika, Kibira forest and Rusizi national park.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bujumbura international airport

On arrival at Bujumbura international airport, you will be received by our guide and transferred to your lodge for relaxation and overnight and if time allows you will visit a forex bureau to change money and also visit a supermarket for a small shopping of snacks.

Day 2: Boat cruise on Rusizi River and visit of Lake Tanganyika

After morning breakfast you will drive to Rusizi national park where you will do a boat cruise where you expect to encounter wildlife like hippopotamus, antelopes, and monkeys along with numerous species of beautiful birds and later you will also visit Lake Tanganyika for lunch on the beach and later return to the lodge for overnight.

Day 3: Drive to Kibira national park for a primate walk

After early morning breakfast, you will depart Bujumbura for Kibira national park for your ultimate primate walk, the park is a habitat to 98 mammal species, a dozen primates (numerous families of chimpanzees, baboons, red-tailed monkeys, black colobus, and some 200 species of birdlife and after you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 4: Visit the Gishora drum entertainers

Depending on the time of the entertainment our guide will advise on the departure time to enjoy one of Africa’s finest drum entertainments, In Burundi, the drums were the pillar of the political power of the monarchy. They were made and beaten on special occasions by specialized families called ‘Abatimbo’ in important places, announcing great events of the country like the royal enthronement, the sowing festival, the funerals of the kings, and gave the rhythm of regular seasons.

Day 5: City tour and Depart Burundi for your onward journey

After morning breakfast you will head to the city for a city tour of Bujumbura, the city was established as a German military station early in the 20th century or to see the meeting place between Burton Speke and Livingston, the Bauhaus style of architecture (German-style of arts), the monuments to heroes of independence and democracy or simply the daily life of the people, the vibes at the beaches of lakes Tanganyika or the Bujumbura Night Life then you won’t regret your time in this vibrant city of Burundi and later you will be transferred to the airport for your onward journey.

Any time of the year at any time but we recommend booking at least 1 week in advance to allow us to secure the primate permits for Kibira national park.

Best time to visit Burundi for a safari

The best time to visit Burundi for primate trekking is from Mid-February to early June then mid-September to mid-December. During this time, food is very abundant making it easier to spot the intelligent curious primates for they are usually eating the leaves as well as fruits.
