Sioma Ngwezi National Park Zambia

Sioma Ngwezi National Park Zambia

Sioma Ngwezi National Park is mainly covered by Kalahari woodland. It is the third-largest Park in Zambia covering a total area of more than 5000 sq km. The Park has been heavily poached, but the situation is improving and wildlife is recovering. As an example elephants are returning to the Park, seen at the southeast border where elephants have re -established an old migration route, now very visible with several tracks in a corridor extending not more than one kilometer In the Park most wild game associated with the African bush may be encountered although up to now in fairly low numbers. According to wildlife scouts from the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA), the Park holds a huge variety of game species such as elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, eland, sable, roan, tsessebe, zebra, impala, kudu, duiker, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and Sitatunga as well as a great number of birds.

Game drives, game walks, and bird watching excursions are offered from Sioma Camp. Tiger fishing in the Zambezi River presents a challenge for sport anglers from all over the world. The main natural attraction in the area is the Sioma (or Ngonye), Falls. The Falls, although not nearly as spectacular as Victoria Falls, do however impress visitors as they are quite extensive. In the dry season, you can get up close and even take a swim in one of the rock pools. The local people belong to the Lozi tribe who is ruled by the Barotse Royal Establishment, representing one of the richest cultures in Zambia. This also expands into neighboring countries.

From Livingstone. There is a brand new road all the way from Livingstone to Sesheke and Katima Mulilo. From Mongu. There is a good tar road to Senanga and the last opportunity for fuel before Livingstone. Game Drives

Game drives are possible despite the lack of road infrastructure. Only a few operators offer this activity. It is possible to take your own car but this is not recommended as it is difficult to make your way around. If you do decide to self-drive through the park, 4×4’s would be advisable, and hiring a guide is a good idea.

walking in the African Bush

Sounds like your type of activity, then you are in luck as the largely unspoiled park is a walker’s paradise. A guide can be hired to accompany you as you explore the flora and fauna of this remote park.

Bird Watching

In the park as in many of Zambia’s national parks is fantastic. The prominence of the Kwando River in the south provides a haven for birds like the African fish eagle, yellow-billed kites, and kingfishers.

Water fall hikes

The nearby Zambezi River is also home to the Ngonye (or Sioma) Falls. With a height of 10- 25m, they are not as high or as well-known as the famous Victoria Falls, but the sheer volume of water and the width of the falls make a visit to them worthwhile. In the dry season, there may even be a possibility to take a swim in one of the many rock pools. While you are exploring the Zambezi River, you may wish to try your hand at tiger fishing, kayaking, canoeing, or even enjoying a leisurely sunset cruise.

When to visit Sioma Ngwezi national park Zambia

The best time to visit Sioma Ngwezi and Ngonye Falls national parks is from May to early June, just after the rainy season. Many of Sioma Ngwezi’s Dambos (wetland pools) will still have water and it’s the most prolific period for wildlife viewing. The falls at Ngonye (about 120km further north) are also at their best while the river is high.
