The Ssese Islands are an archipelago of eighty-four islands in the north-western part of Lake Victoria in Uganda. The islands are coterminous with the Kalangala district in southern Central Uganda, which does not have any territory on mainland Uganda, the white sand beaches offering terrific and romantic gateways from anywhere in East Africa is one of the key reasons why Ssese islands have become a top destination for honeymooners.

Things to do during your Ssese Island beach holidays

There many activities ranging from water sport, hiking, bird watching that you can do while at the island on your holiday.

Zoo and Bird Paradise Park

Come and have an up-close experience with small animals and birds that will entice your heart. This Conservation educational park attracts foreign and local urbanized families and children who have no touch or encounter with wildlife or livestock… Join us for an experience of a lifetime.

Birding

The island has many different birds. Ssese Islands Beach Hotel has set up a Bird Paradise Park that provides an excellent place to view many of the different species.

Sport Fishing

Guests have several options when it comes to fishing. You can try your luck from our jetty or hire a motorboat with a Fish Finder for the deep waters of Lake Victoria. Whatever you catch, we have a very large barbecue grill where you can cook your catch or get our chef to help you out. All these activities are on pre-booking.

Sunset Platforms, BBQ, and Campfires

Enjoy a sundowners drink with a stunning view of Lake Victoria. At night relax at our night bonfire with a drink after enjoying one of Ssese’s famous sunsets. Our BBQ offers a juicy grill and fresh vegetables, all yours to enjoy at the beach.

Forest and Nature walks

Taking a forest walk through the island gives you a new lease of life; you get to see some of Africa’s greatest hard and softwoods. The trees create a complete environment for the birds, insects, and butterflies.

Village and Cultural walks

It is not often you get to wander into a stranger’s home and share quality time with them but in the S.I.B.H guided village walk, not only is it ok, it is expected.

Quad biking

Ride with us into the warm heart of Ssese, through palm plantations and villages. No previous experience of driving a vehicle is necessary. A training session is conducted before setting off. Mud is good, water puddles even better.

Canoe rides

Canoeing affords you the opportunity to simply get away from it all and spend time on the shores of Lake Victoria winding down. Enjoy the fresh air of the outdoors.

Banana boat rides

Banana Boat Rides are a great way for family or group of friends to cool off and enjoy the water. This is a unique attraction and just plain fun. Not everyone can say “they`ve had the thrill of skimming across the water on a giant high-speed banana”.

Camping sites

Experience the great outdoors on your camping holiday. Ssese Islands Beach Hotel Campsite is set right at the beachfront you will truly enjoy the experience of sleeping in the wild only with the sounds of the water.

Boat trip to tour islands

Set off on a boat to different islands. With you, you will take a packed lunch, some drinks, and an aperitif for the sunset or breakfast for the sunrise as you cruise along you will see incredible birdlife on the shores of the Lake.

Motorbike tours

Riding yourself on a Boda Boda or sitting behind a local driver can be an experience. Enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery on the Island, visit different landing sites, palm oil plantations, and local communities.

Golf

Challenging greens, majestic fairways, and extraordinary views are all yours to enjoy at the Island your get your skills of golfing back on while at the island.

Best time to visit Ssese Island for your beach holidays

Ssese Islands can be visited all year round by the best time to visit the islands is between June and October and from December to February when the weather is dry and there less rainfall.

How to get to Ssese Island

The MV Kalangala ship from Entebbe to Ssese Islands docks at Lutoboka pier, only 300 meters from some of the Lodges at the island, With a capacity of 108 people and 10 small vehicles, it proves to be a reliable and cost-effective mode of transport to the Island passing through various scenery and is an experience of its own. Leaving daily at 2 pm from Entebbe, it’s a 3-hour journey arriving at Lutoboka pier at 5 pm.

Where to stay during your Ssese island beach holidays

There are quite a few places to stay at the Ssese islands but we recommend staying at the Brovad sands lodge which is just at the shores of the lake at a perfect lagoon giving you great scenery and incredible views of the Lake and the surrounding.
