Ntebeko gorilla trekking sector is the starting point for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga gorilla national park, this is Uganda’s smallest national park covering only 34 square kilometers and it is home to mountain gorillas and the rare golden monkeys that live in the lowland forest and bamboo zones of the great Virunga volcanoes, the park is a transfrontier national park bordering Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park and DR Congo’s Virunga national park respectively and also Mgahinga is famous for challenging day hikes like Sabyinyo volcanic mountain hike.
Gorilla families in the Ntebeko gorilla trekking sector
Being a small rainforest currently, Mgahinga gorilla national park has one gorilla family known as Nyakagezi which roams the rainforest regularly Hirwa gorilla family from Rwanda’s Volcanoes national park does crosses through for a few months and goes back but its not considered Ugandan gorilla group because Rwanda is the one that has been doing research on this family.

Gorilla trekking is the most popular tourist attraction in Mgahinga gorilla national park, there are several other activities you can do after gorilla trekking or on extra days while in Mgahinga and some of the activities include

How to get to the Ntebeko gorilla trekking sector
Ntebeko gorilla trekking sector is the most accessible gorilla trekking area in Uganda; the area can be accessed by Air or by road via Kisoro Town.
- By Air
There are direct domestic flights from Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip which is only 14 km to the park station at Ntebeko and this can take up to 40 minutes drives in a 4×4 safari vehicle recommended as the road is slightly rough and rocky.
- By Road
The easiest access point to Mgahinga gorilla national park is via the Rwandan capital Kigali if you are planning a short safari but on our regular safaris you can access the park headquarters from Queen Elizabeth national park via Ruhija or Kabale to Kisoro which is about 6 hours’ drive and from Kampala it’s 9-10 hours’ drive on a smooth road
Where to stay in the Ntebeko gorilla trekking sector
There are limited places to stay in Mgahinga gorilla national park and the only lodge near the park gate in Ntebeko is Mount Gahinga lodge the rest of the lodges are located in Kisoro town and Lake Mutanda respectively.
