Fazao-Malfakassa National Park Togo

Fazao-Malfakassa National Park is located in western parts of Togo and is near, and at one point against, the international border with Ghana. The park was established in 1975 and stretches to include forest reserves of Fazao and Mlafakassa. Covering 1920sq km. it is one of the largest protected areas in Togo.

This UNESCO Heritage Site boasts the largest pristine forest region in Togo stretching on the foothills of Mont de Malfakassa in the north to Monts du Fazao in the central. The park’s habitat is savannah grasslands, woodlands and dense forests growing are a rugged mountainous area. Some of the rivers draining the park include Kpaza and Koué rivers.

Some of the mammals in the park include elephants, chimpanzees, and other small mammal species. The birds in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park include Francolins, Hawk eagles, grey parrot, heron, Senegal Parrot, hornbill, swamp greenbul, Senegal Eremomela, Firefinch and sunbirds among others.

The Park is open for Togo Holidays and safaris from November to April during the dry season. The rainy season is from April to October. Although it is good for bird watching the rains make the park impassable and more since it is in rugged terrain.

This 1920-sq-km national park is one of the most diverse West African parks in terms of landscape, with forest, savannah, rocky cliffs, and waterfalls.

Location of Fazao-Malfakassa National Park

Fazao Malfakassa National Park is the largest of three national parks in Togo, the others being Kéran and Fosse aux Lions. It is situated between the Kara Region and Centrale Region in semi-mountainous wetland and forms part of the border with Ghana.

Using a 4×4 safari vehicle the drive takes approximately 5h 48m to drive 337.7 km from Lomé to Fazao Malfakassa National Park.

Things to do in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park

Fazao-Malfakassa National Park has rich biodiversity through a hike away from the noise of civilization. You can expect to view lush greenery, several waterfalls, and the surrounding hills, which you can climb. The park is home to a variety of animal and plant species; watch for wild pigs.

-Birding can prolific during the rainy season from March to May at the forest edge but finding good birding guides may be challenging in the countryside.

When to visit Fazao-Malfakassa National Park

The busiest month for tourism in Togo is February, followed by March and December. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Togo in May. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Where to stay in Fazao-Malfakassa National Park

There are no known properties in the Fazao-malfakassa national and travellers can stay at Kara region city which is located 70 km from the park or those with camping equipment to camp near the forest but there are no services available so you need to take everything you need including water.
