Rufiji River fishing Tanzania
The defining feature of Nyerere National Park Tanzania is the river systems that flow into it from the surrounding highlands. As these rivers lose altitude, they move towards each other and convene to become the Rufiji River. The Rufiji meanders its way towards the Indian Ocean, and over time, this massive body of water has chiseled features into the land such as gorges, lakes, swamps, and marshes, all of which make for a very dramatic landscape. The river systems attract and sustain a diverse range of wildlife and vegetation. Nyerere National Park is one of the few places in Tanzania where it is possible to go on a boat safari along the river and its tributaries, an incredible experience that gives a unique perspective on the wildlife.
Catfish and tiger fish are prolific in the river. Considered by many fishermen to be the finest freshwater fighting fish, the tiger fish’s Latin name, Hydrocyon, means ‘water dog’ and aptly describes this voracious predator, which is armed with a ferocious blade-like tooth. If you’d like to try fishing, your dedicated guide will provide rods, boats, and a choice of sites.
The lakes and rivers are home to a wide variety of catfish, some growing to many feet in length. However, the real target is the greatest of all African freshwater fish, the tiger! You’ll know immediately if you’ve hooked into one of these, the water will explode with an acrobatic aerial display of flashing silver, blood-red fins and dagger-sharp gnashing teeth. In all likelihood, you won’t be on for long, but a bit of patience and some luck could see you landing one of the highly sought big tigers!
