Limpopo National Park Mozambique
Safaris are – of course – the main draw and countless tourists come in to hit the grassy plains by 4X4 to seek out lions, elephants, waterbuck, etc.
Size of Limpopo National Park Mozambique
Parque Nacional du Limpopo (PNL) in Mozambique was proclaimed in November 2001. It was previously used as a hunting zone and covers an area of 1,123,316 ha, and is more or less half the size of the Kruger National Park. The park officially opened to the public in August 2005.
Location of Limpopo National Park Mozambique
Limpopo National Park is the Mozambican counterpart of South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The two parks share a 200km border, and 50km of fence line has been removed to make a wildlife corridor. 5,000 animals were relocated from Kruger into Limpopo to restock the park. Wildlife numbers are still very low, but recovery is noticeable. The joining of Kruger and Limpopo national parks is part of the establishment of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP), which also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.
How to get to Limpopo National Park Mozambique
You can hire a 4×4 in Maputo and drive to the park. The distance is about 400km/250mi and the drive takes about five hours. Limpopo NP can also be visited as an extension to a Kruger NP tour or en route from Kruger to the Mozambican coast. There are two border posts between Kruger and Limpopo.
Things to do in Limpopo National Park Mozambique
Animals were trans-located from Kruger into Mozambique and other wildlife slowly started moving into the neighboring land. Further negotiations between Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe to form a collective conservation area, has ensured the future protection and survival of the Limpopo National Park.
At Machampane Wilderness Camp walking safaris and game drives can be arranged and we highly recommend guided safaris in the park using the park rangers or hotel guides
When to visit Limpopo National Park
Wildlife viewing in Limpopo is best during the middle and end of the Dry season (from July to October) when the bush is less thick and animals stay closer to predictable water sources. It does, however, get very hot at the end of the Dry season before the rains break the heat.
