Marsabit Town Kenya

Marsabit Town Kenya

Rising in a medley of ramshackle tin homes and lean-to timber shacks from the midst of the great Kenyan deserts in the north, this largely un traded town is one for the conservation buffs and ethical tourists.

It’s currently the focus of a number of humanitarian missions, which are attempting to provide schooling, clean water, and the like to the local tribal communities.

More than 422 kilometers from Nairobi, the town is far-flung, to say the least, but that means an authentic view of Kenyan life and a chance to see the wilder (if that’s possible!), more arid and unexplored section of this popular East African country.

Things to do in Marsabit town Kenya

Visit Marsabit national park

Far to the north of Kenya, lies the Marsabit National Park. It is a densely forested mountain having three crater lakes in it. It is an oasis of green in this arid, desert region of Kenya. The lakes provide a haven for a variety of birdlife, mammals, and reptiles. The park is known for its huge, impressive tusked-elephants. However, this national park is not much known for game-drives. If you are heading up to Lake Turkana, this acts as an interesting site to spend a night in.

Visit Shurr community conservancy

Established in 2013, and immediately to the east of Marsabit, this conservancy has a lot of potentials and there’s more wildlife around here than many people realize, though there are currently no visitor facilities.

How to get to Marsabit Kenya

Marsabit National Park is situated 560 kilometers from Nairobi. The Park is reached via Nanyuki and Isiolo. The road is tar up to Merille, and road construction is planned to continue as far as Moyale on the Ethiopian border. At present, the road from Merille to Marsabit is still quite bad and a four wheel drive vehicle is recommended.
