Stretching out from the banks of the spectacular Zambezi River, the Zambezi National Park is best known for its natural beauty, abundant game, and world-renowned river. The park is home to a variety of wildlife including the famous Big Five as well as herds of sable antelope, eland, zebra, giraffe, and kudu, and over 400 bird species. A large floodplain characterizes the landscape which is snaked by numerous rivers and dotted with acacia and miombo woodlands. Visitors can look forward to a variety of activities such as excellent wildlife viewing, game drives, bird watching, kayaking safaris, and guided bush walks.

Size of Zambezi National Park

Zambezi National Park is a national park located upstream of Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. It was split off from Victoria Falls National Park in 1979 and is 56,000 hectares in size. The park is bisected by a road to Kazungula, dividing it into a riverine side and a Chamabonda Vlei side.

Location of Zambezi National Park

The northern border of the Park is formed by the great Zambezi River which also forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia for much of its length.

How to get to Zambezi National Park

Zambezi National Park, on the southern bank of the Zambezi River, is located less than 5km/3mi on a tarred road from Victoria Falls town.

Things to do in Zambezi National Park

Game drives

The Zambezi River Game Drive, with an extensive network of roads along the river accessed through the main gate of the Park, and the 25-kilometer Chamabondo Game Drive in the southern part of the Park, which begins about 5 kilometers outside of Victoria Falls town – just off the main road to Bulawayo. The roads are in reasonable condition, but please note that they do close the park after heavy rains.

Fishing safaris

There are over 75 fish species found inhabiting these waters. The most sought-after of these is the Tigerfish well renowned as probably the greatest fighting freshwater fish around. It is a ferocious species that can grow as large as 33 lbs. (15 Kg) in weight.

Boat cruise

You can arrange boat trips from Victoria Falls to Zambezi national park to see wildlife like elephants, Buffalos, and incredible birdlife.

When to visit Zambezi National Park

The best time for wildlife viewing in Zambezi National Park is from June to September, the middle and end of the Dry season. The Zambezi River becomes a place for animals to congregate and, during this dry time, the bush thins out making it easier to see them.
