From warriors to nomads: critical perspectives of primitive migrations among the Zarma of Niger. This article critically examines interpretations of primitive migrations among Zarma peasants from south-western Niger to parts of the Guinea Coast that began around 1900 – migrations that continue to this day. According to views found in several studies done on Zarma migrations, the cause of these primitive movements lies in the structural displacement of the Zarma warrior class by the European military intrusion which began at the end of the nineteenth century. From this perspective, displaced warriors became nomads. While the linking role of displaced warriors cannot be denied, the ‘warriors turned nomad’ thesis ignores the significant impact of French colonial policy on conditions in the regions of origin of the nomads. This article asserts that a satisfactory understanding of the transition from the pre-colonial period to the colonial period in south-western Niger, as well as the demographic mobility that resulted shortly thereafter, is only possible after consideration.
