Lusenga Plains National Park Zambia

Lusenga Plains National Park is in Luapula province in the North of Zambia. This park has not been operational for many years but it is now being restocked. Impala and zebra have been released, and soon wildebeest. Sabi Sands in SA is working on a project to relocate between 300 and 500 elephants from Sabi to Lusenga Plains and Sumbu NP in May 2009. New network roads are being graded, and funding is being sought for more scouts, firearms, and vehicles for anti-poaching, bicycles, and motorbikes for scouts, and possibly a light aircraft for surveys. Lusenga plains are being managed as a trust and are now accessible by road with signposts from Kawambwa.

Lusenga Plain National Park forms part of the northern safari circuit of Zambia. International safari-goers can fly into Lusaka and catch a connecting flight to Kawambwa, where most of the accommodation options are located. The closest domestic airport is Kawambwa Airstrip.

Lusenga Plain National Park is a national park in the Kawambwa District, Luapula Province of Zambia, to the south-east of Lake Mweru. Originally a grounds for hunting, Lusenga Plain was converted into one of Zambia’s national parks in 1972

A two-day tough drive from Lusaka to Kawanda can be taken on a well-conditioned 4×4 and upon arrival in Kawamba you just follow the signposts.

Things to do in Lusenga plains national park

Lumangwe Falls

The waterfalls can be visited and incredible rock paintings in the park, the natural scenery of this heavy rainfall region are spectacular. The Kalungwishi River flows powerfully into Lumangwe Falls, one of Zambia’s highest and second-most visited waterfalls aside from Victoria Falls. In terms of game viewing, visitors can see plains game such as impala, kudu, zebra, buffalo, and sable around the Miombo woodland sector.

Wildlife viewing

Less wildlife have been introduced and you can view them through very scarce but an experience.

Birding tours

The Kalungwishi River flows through the park can give you great views of some water birds while in the park on an expedition.

When to visit Lusenga plains national park

Lusenga Plain National Park is a relatively hot and humid destination with a typical tropical climate. The dry season is the best time of year to visit the northern reaches of Zambia. The dry season is from June to November. Zambia is quite a high rainfall region.
