Tadjoura Town Djibouti

It’s one of the oldest towns on the east coast of African and dates back at least to the 12th century. Governed by a sultan, Tadjoura was once a great port for goods between Djibouti and Ethiopia – including, unfortunately, the slave trade.  Often called La Ville Blanche, or White Town, because of the many lovely whitewashed homes in town, it’s a great town for walking as there are many great views of the waterfront.  In the late afternoons, you’ll find all the locals out and about.  There are a number of nice mosques to see and you’ll love relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere of this quieter and less chaotic version of Djibouti City.

Nestled in the shadow of the green Goda Mountains with the bright-blue sea lapping at its doorstep, Tadjoura is a picturesque little place. With its palm trees, whitewashed houses, and numerous mosques, it has an Arabian feel to it. There’s little to do here besides stroll around and soak up the atmosphere, but it’s a great place to spend a few hours before heading to Plage des Sables Blancs or Obock.

How to get to Tadjoura Town Djibouti

By vehicle Tadjoura town is located about 180 km from the main capital Djibouti and the shores of the blue sea and this drive can take up to 3-4 hours.

Tadjoura hosts an airport but the airport is served rarely. So it is suggested for international tourists to first reach Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport in Djibouti City, where taxis are always being ready for visitors and also one can use buses for inexpensive airport travel. If one book a private transfer before reaching the airport that would be great.

Tadjoura is also reachable by ferry from Djibouti City, which takes nearly two and a half-hour.
