Mayotte Tours

Mayotte is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. It’s a department and region of France, though traditional Mayotte culture is most closely related to that of the neighboring Comoros islands. The Mayotte archipelago is surrounded by a coral barrier reef, which shelters a lagoon and marine reserve that are popular diving destinations.

More than a hundred beaches line the shores of the island with 30 or so small islets doted inside the main lagoon and offer postcard images where the turquoise of the lagoon contrast with the white sand beaches.

With a 1,100 km2 lagoon it is not surprising that the main Mahoran lagoon has become a diving paradise, yet remains largely unknown. The Marine Natural Park of Mayotte has created a high-quality marine environment.

Sheltered by the fury of the Indian Ocean, the Mayotte lagoon is a haven of peace for very diverse fauna and flora. In a true natural aquarium, there are at least 300 different species of coral, 760 species of tropical fish, 2 types of sea turtles, hawksbill turtles and green turtles, and 22 species of marine mammals, ¼ of the world’s diversity. A recent census of the “National Inventory of Natural Heritage” lists no less than 3,600 marine species. This part of the world serves as a refuge for large marine mammals including whales and dolphins, reptiles such as turtles and marine snakes, and a myriad of other iconic species such as dugongs, manta rays, sharks, parrotfish humpback, the Napoleon fish, and many others.
