A long and narrow landlocked country it covers more than 1,000 kilometers from north to south while Lake Malawi, nearly 600km long and up to 80km wide, dominates the countryside. When David Livingstone arrived at the lakeshore in 1861, he was the first European explorer to see the Lake.

There is no country in all of Africa that has its geography so sculptured and determined by Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the largest single geographical feature on Earth. This ancient 5,000 km-long geological formation bisects much of Africa from Egypt to Botswana and boasts a bewildering array of habitats and lush vegetation. Towering mountains, lush, fertile valley floors, and enormous crystal-clear lakes are hallmarks of much of the Rift Valley – and Malawi displays them all. Fertile soils are a result of the Rift Valley and evidence of this is to be found everywhere in Malawi.

Day 1-2: Thyolo tea estate, Huntingdon House

On arrival in Blantyre you will be met by your driver guide who will transfer you to Satemwa tea estates which is a 3rd generation of family-owned Tea and Coffee estates in the Shire Highlands of Malawi established in 1923.

For nearly 100 years we have been crafting superior teas and coffees which are exported around the world. The latest editions to our range are a unique artisanal lineup of green, white, oolong, black and dark teas.

Day 3 – 5: Liwonde National Park, Mvuu Lodge

This morning after breakfast you will be transferred to Liwonde National Park which is located in Malawi’s Southern Region. It makes up part of the larger Liwonde-Mangochi complex which is managed by African Parks in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.

The park is home to Malawi’s largest elephant, black rhino and cheetah, and waterbuck populations. The park’s large herbivore numbers have allowed it to act as a source population, providing numerous animals to other protected areas in Malawi in an effort to restock and enhance genetic diversity.

Day 6: Lilongwe, Latitude 13

After your morning activity and brunch, you will be transferred to Lilongwe the Capital City of Malawi, and one of the major entry points into the country. It is the seat of government and is located in the central region. Lilongwe started as a small village on the banks of the Lilongwe River and became a British colonial administrative center at the start of the 20th century. Lilongwe is sometimes referred to as the green city because of its well-tendered gardens and abundant trees, exotic and indigenous and you to spend the night at Latitude 13.

Day 7 – 9: Nyika National Park, Chelinda Lodge

This morning after breakfast you will be transferred to Lilongwe Airport to take the chartered flight to Nyika National Park Nyika which is Malawi’s largest park, with an area of not less than 1250 sq. miles (3200 sq. km) extending across the great Nyika plateau, which is a granitic dome of rolling ‘whaleback’ hills cut by streams and interspersed with pockets of sheltered evergreen forest. Reaching altitudes of over 8000 ft. (2500 m), its environment is like none other in the whole of Africa, with its stunningly beautiful scenery leaving most of its visitors lost for words. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to stay at Chelinda Lodge for the next 3 nights.

Day 10 – 12: Kaya Mawa, Likoma Island

This morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip to take the scheduled flight to Likoma Island Off the eastern shore of the Lake is Likoma Island, a small piece of Malawian territory in Mozambican waters. The University Mission to Central Africa (David Livingstone’s mission) set up its headquarters on Likoma in the 1880s in part to try to fight the slave trade that used routes across Lake Malawi. Because of this history, Likoma was retained by Malawi when the Lake was divided politically after World War II and the waters around it became Mozambican, on arrival you will be met and transferred to stay at Kaya Mawa for the next 3 nights and activities include Bird watching, Walking on the white sandy beaches, Island tours, Snorkeling, Diving

Day 13: End of itinerary

Today after breakfast you will be transferred to the Likoma airstrip to take the scheduled flight to Lilongwe where you will check in for your onward journey.

Best time to visit Malawi for a Safari

July to October are the best wildlife viewing months (from the middle to the end of the Dry season) as all water in the bush has dried up, and animals congregate around permanent water sources. Keep in mind, however, that October is extremely hot. The exception is Nyika Plateau, which gets very cold in the dry winter months. In Nyika, a more pleasant time is from November to May.
