12 Days Flying Mozambique Wildlife and Beach Holiday
Mozambique is emphatically a maritime country, with an astonishing 2,500 kilometers of Indian Ocean frontage separating South Africa from Tanzania, and the vast majority of visitors never stray further inland than they need to. Despite this, the country is divided into two distinct parts, the north, and the south, linked by a solitary bridge across the Zambezi River and offering very different experiences to visitors.
Safari highlights
- Game viewing in Gorongosa national park
- Beach holidays in Bazaruto Archipelago
Detailed safari itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Beira and transfer to your lodge
On your arrival in Beira, you will be met by your Wilderness Explorers Africa representative and transferred to your comfortable local hotel. You have the choice of dining in the hotel this evening or heading out into Beira to sample some of this region’s delicious seafood.
Day 2: Drive from Beira to Gorongosa National Park
Today we will transfer from Beira in closed vehicles, taking around three hours to arrive at our lodge in Gorongosa. Once settled into the lovely surrounds of the Montebello lodge, we will head out into the reserve in a private, open vehicle to take in this incredibly varied and beautiful national park.
Our key focus will be locating the park’s famous population of Lions, as well as the large herds of Bush elephants that roam the fever-tree forests. In recent years, Gorongosa has been the site of a stirring conservation effort, and now boasts a population of around ninety African Wild Dogs. This tour is specifically designed to maximize our chances of encountering these wild dogs whilst they have young pups – a real treat!
Day 3-6: Gorongosa NP
We have the luxury of five full days in this magical national park, allowing us to experience the rich diversity of wildlife and landscapes for which Gorongosa is famous. Big-game species, including Lion and elephants, are often seen here, and we will be sure to spend plenty of time with them. Leopard and Serval are occasionally seen on the floodplains, and we will very likely also encounter a wide range of antelope species, including Impala, Bushbuck, Nyala, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, Southern Reedbuck, and more.
The birding here is also incredible and rarely does a drive go by without a new and exciting species being seen. Short night drives after sundowners regularly reveal Civet, Cape Porcupine, and, occasionally, Leopard. Included in the price of your trip are two walking safaris – a great chance to get a feel for the wilderness here – and a boat safari on the vast Lake Urema At an additional cost, you may choose to take a day trip to Mt Gorongosa in search of its rare endemic birds.
Day 7: Domestic flight from Beira to Bazaruto Archipelago
You will bid farewell to the staff at Gorongosa early on today, as we transfer back to Beira for your flight to Vilankulo on arrival you will be received by our representative and transferred to the jetty for your boat transfer to your lodge for relaxation.
