The Luangwa River is the most intact major river system in Africa and is the life-blood of this 9059 km2 Park. The Park hosts a wide variety of wildlife, birds, and vegetation. The now-famous ‘walking safari’ originated in this Park and is still one of the finest ways to experience Africa’s pristine wilderness first-hand. The changing seasons add to the Park’s richness, ranging from; dry, bare bushveld in the winter, to a lush, green wonderland in the summer months. There are 60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species in South Luangwa National Park. The only notable exception is the rhino, sadly poached to extinction.

Detailed safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lusaka international airport and transfer to your lodge for relaxation

After your long flight to Zambia our guide will receive you and transfer you to your booked hotel for relaxation, depending on the time of arrival you may visit Lusaka town for shopping and later return to the lodge for overnight

Day 2: Domestic flight from Lusaka to South Luangwa national park

After morning breakfast you will be received by our guide and transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to south Luangwa national park. On arrival at Mfuwe Airport you are met by the lodge guide who will drive you to camp. The drive is a game drive on its own as wildlife can be spotted. Your guide will make stops as you go along to the camp. The Camp is situated just outside of the South Luangwa National Park in a riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the park. The Luangwa National Park is one of the most prolific and bountiful parks covering an area of 9000 kilometres² (3,475 square miles) of pristine wilderness in Zambia’s Eastern Province.

Day 3: Full day game drives in South Luangwa national park

You meet before the morning safari at 0530hrs for some light breakfast of tea, coffee, toast, and cereals, then head out on the morning drive at 0600hrs. Returning to camp usually just after 1000hrs. In the afternoon you meet for tea at 15:30, then leave on the afternoon drive at around 1600hrs, returning to camp just after 2000hrs when the park gate closes.

Day 4: Morning walking safari and an evening game drive in the park

After an early morning breakfast you will drive in to the park for a walking safari with the armed experience walking safari guides, this is one of the ultimate african safari experiences as you will approach some of African big game on foot like Giraffes, Elephants, Buffalos, Hippos, Lions, nothing can be compared to looking on  face to face with African male lion in a true wilderness after the walk you will return to the lodge for relaxation and after you will head out for an evening game drive in search of more wildlife in the park.

Day 5: Morning community visit and an evening game drive in the park
After lazily morning breakfast at the camp you will visit the nearby community working with the camp , this will give you an insider of the conservation of South Luangwa after you will return to lodge for lunch and relaxation, Then in the afternoon you meet for tea at 1530, then leave for an evening game drive at around 1600hrs, returning to camp just after 2000hrs when the park gate closes.

Day 6: Domestic flight from South Luangwa to Victoria Falls

After morning breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Livingstone, upon arrival you will be received by our guide and transfer to the lodge for relaxation and Overnight.

Day 7: Full day hiking of Victoria falls

After morning breakfast at your lodge our guide will pick you up and transfer you to the starting point for a hike to view Victoria Falls, Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world. You will take your time to enjoy this magnificent falls and later return to the lodge for late lunch and relaxation.

Day 8: Full day fishing on River Zambezi

After morning breakfast you will meet the fishing guides with the fishing boat and head out for fishing, some of the species to look out for include the Tiger fish well renowned as probably the greatest fighting fresh water fish around. It is a ferocious species which can grow as large as 33 lbs. (15 Kg) in weight.

However you can also expect to catch three-spot, pink-happy and Yellow-belly bream, Upper Zambezi Yellowfish, African Pike and Silver Barbel to name just a few of the most common.

Day 9: Departure flight

Depending on your departure flight time, your guide will pick you up from your lodge and transfer you to Livingstone Airport or Victoria Falls Airport for your international flight out ending your unforgettable safari.

When to book this safari package

We recommend 6 months to 1 year in advance as lodges in south Luangwa gets booked up quite easily in the high season from June to November.

Best time to visit Zambia

The best time to visit Zambia is during the dry season between June and November. The skies are cobalt blue, the days are hot, and the nights are cool.
