14 Days Wildebeest Migration

Over years the annual wildebeest migration that takes place between Kenya and Tanzania has become one of the top tourist attractions in East Africa, the annual movement of Wildebeest, zebras, Thomson’s gazelle, and the Elands from Serengeti national park to Masai mara national reserve is made extraordinary by the fact that the wildebeest have to face their greatest obstacle of the entire movement which is the crocodile-filled Mara River which happens between July and October.

Safari itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Entebbe to Kibale forest national park

After morning breakfast you will start your drive southwest of the Ugandan capital Kampala towards Kibale forest national park, this is one of the best places in Africa to trek the chimpanzees, this beautiful drive will take you through tea farms and incredible landscapes upon arrival you will check in to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 2: First Chimpanzee trekking experience in Kibale forest national park

After early morning breakfast, you will drive to Kanyanchu park headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking by the park rangers after the briefing you will head into the forest to start trekking the chimpanzees by voice, previous nest, and any movements in the forest, upon locating the chimpanzees you will spend 1 hour with the chimpanzees and later return to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 3: Second Chimpanzee trekking experience in Kibale forest

After an incredible day in the forest, you will again transfer to Kanyanchu park headquarters for another briefing with the park rangers and after the briefing, you will head into the forest to trek the chimpanzees again, just like the previous day you will use the sign way to look out for chimps and upon locating the chimps you will spend 1 hour with them and later transfer to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 4: Drive to Bwindi impenetrable national park

After morning breakfast you will start your drive to Bwindi impenetrable national park via Queen Elizabeth national park where you have a glimpse of wildlife en route upon arrival in Bwindi you will check in to your lodge and relax as you prepare for a gorilla trekking experience.

Day 5: First Gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi forest

This will be one of the greatest wildlife encounters in your trip as you will be looking forward to coming face to face with the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, after morning breakfast fully dressed in your trekking gear you will be transferred to the park headquarters to meet the park rangers after meeting the ranger guides you will have a briefing with other travelers and after you will be split into smaller gorilla groups and you will start your trek into the forest upon locating the mountain gorillas you will spend 1 hour with them and later return to the lodge for relaxation.

Day 6: Second gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi forest and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After morning breakfast fully dressed in your trekking gear you will be transferred  again to the park headquarters for your second gorilla trekking experience, just like the previous day you will meet the guides and go through a briefing and later start your trek into the forest upon locating the Mountain gorillas you will spend 1 hour with the mountain gorillas and return to the lodge for refreshment and after you will start your drive to Lake Bunyonyi which is the deepest lake in Uganda for relaxation and overnight.

Day 7: Full day relaxation in Lake Bunyonyi

You will have the morning at leisure and do an evening boat cruise on Lake Bunyonyi, this trip will take you to see the historical islands, birds, and local fishermen, and you will also enjoy cold drinks and snacks on the cruise and after watching the sunset down you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Drive to Entebbe and connect your flight to Kilimanjaro

After morning breakfast you will start your drive to Entebbe to catch your flight to Kilimanjaro international airport, upon arrival you will be received by your guide and transfer to Arusha overnight as you prepare for your safari to Serengeti national park to follow the Wildebeest Migration.

Day 9: Drive from Arusha to Lake Manyara national park

After morning breakfast you will start your drive to Lake Manyara national park, this park is located at the edge of the Rift valley, you will enjoy wildlife viewing in the park some of the wildlife to look out for include tree-climbing lions, giraffes, buffalos, and hippos and abundant birdlife along the Lake.

Day 10: Drive from Lake Manyara to Serengeti national park

After a short morning game drive in the park, you will start your drive to Serengeti national park where you will be hopping to follow the wildebeest herds in the park and also look out for incredible predators that traverse the plains of the Serengeti during the Wildebeest Migration.

Day 11: Full day game drives in Serengeti to follow the wildebeest Migration herds

After morning breakfast with packed lunch, you will start your slow game drive towards Mara River on this drive you will expect to see wildlife like Elephants, Zebras, Thomson gazelle, wildebeest, and predators like lions, leopard, hyenas, cheetahs, and many others upon locating the mega herds of wildebeest you will sit and wait as they may tempt to cross the Mara River though the mega herds can be found in different crossing points we will take you to the best places after witnessing what the nature has to offer you will later return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 12: Full day game drives in Serengeti to follow the wildebeest Migration herds

After morning breakfast with packed lunch you head out for full day game drive with picnic lunch hopping to see the river crossing, you will also have an opportunity to look out for wildlife you may have missed on the previous game drives after an incredible day you will return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 13: Full day game drives in Serengeti to follow the wildebeest Migration herds

Yet another action-packed day in Serengeti, depending on what you have seen in the past two days you may decide to do a full day or half-day game drive, this drive will also take you to the plains of Serengeti to follow the wildebeest herds and later return to the lodge for hot lunch and later head out for a short sundowner game drive in the park and later return to the lodge for relaxation and overnight.

Day 14: Drive back to Kilimanjaro for your departure flight

After morning breakfast you will start your drive to Arusha, upon arrival in Arusha you may have a quick look through the town for shopping or coffee and later you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro international airport for your flight home or will be transferred to your booked lodge for overnight.

Since this is an East African safari combo we recommend booking this trip 9 months to 1 year in advance to allow us to secure Mountain gorilla and chimpanzee permits and also book the places to stay for the wildebeest Migration in Serengeti.

Best time to Visit East Africa

The best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking and also have higher chances of witnessing the wildebeest Migration is August and October when river crossing occur often and its dry season in Uganda is perfect for a gorilla trekking experience.
